Labor Day Hike

We took advantage of a day off and took in another short hike through our beautiful Arizona desert. There's a regional park west of Phoenix that has a lot of hiking trails, one of which leads up to a potential waterfall. (We say "potential" because it only has water falling just after it has rained.) We thought there might be some water since we've had some great rain storms in the last week. But the ranger told us they only got a little bit of it, so the falls were dry. We decided we'd let the kids find out for themselves so they wouldn't mutiny before we got there. (hee hee)

On the way, there were a lot of rocks just off the trail that had a lot of petroglyphs on them. The trail signs tried to offer some interpretations, but we figured they said things like, "Teancum loves Sariah 4ever" or "On this spot Amaleki stepped on a cactus." What was cool was that there were glyphs all over the place as you sit and stare at the rocks.

Getting to the falls was a treat. It had to be about 20 degrees cooler in the shade of the two sheer walls of rock on either side of us. There was a small trickle of water coming over the top and feeding two small pools of murky water. There were tens of thousands of tadpoles in the ponds, and a few small frogs hopping around. Due to the large number of kids that were already they, I doubt the frogs last too long. As you can see, the kids had fun climbing all over the boulders.
